Culture Based Safety Process
Overview of a system designed to create and sustain an injury-free safety culture...

Only 10% of all accidents are caused by unsafe conditions

Research shows that only 10% of all accidents are caused by unsafe conditions; 90% of all accidents are the result of organizational and human factors. These include management systems, goal-setting, rewards, social recognition, training, communication process,as well as unsafe acts.

While most safety programs focus on the 10% - eliminating the unsafe conditions - The Safety Culture Change Process addresses 90% of the problem by creating a positive safety culture.

The Safety Culture Change Process effectively reduces accidents

Our system has shown dramatic results: in some instances, 20-25% reduction in
injury rates within a few months. Reductions up to 50% have been achieved after the first year.

Your Organization's Safety Culture Impacts Daily Safety Performance

There are visible and invisible components in a safety culture. The visible components are represented by the Culture Wheel diagram. The shadow represents the invisible culture: the norms and assumptions (unspoken rules or beliefs) that guide everyone's behavior. These, more than policy or procedure, determine safety performance.

Any long-lasting improvement in safety performance must encompass change in the culture. Once the unspoken rule becomes, "Do it the safe way," safety becomes an integral part of your organization.

Culture change involves a broad-based examination of many organizational systems that impact daily safety behavior including reward and measurement systems, technology, communication and management styles.

CCC has developed a five-step process to implement a successful culture change that involves all levels of the organization.

5 Steps to Successful Safety Culture Changes
1-
Create a vison of the desired safety culture and communicate it throughout the organization.
2-
Gather input to assess your culture's strengths and weaknesses.
3-
Develop a strategy to implement desired changes and allocate necessary resources: budget, personnel, training, and time.
4-
Implement the strategy and hold people accountable to meeting objectives.
5-
Conduct ongoing evaluation of progress.
