What is Culture-Based Safety?
The Concept is surprisingly simple: to apply the well-developed principles of organizational culture change to occupational safety and health. Instead of concentrating on the technical aspects of safety - equipment and its use - the idea of culture change is to address the hidden beliefs, norms, and assumptions that govern the people side.
What Culture-Based Safety Isn't
Culture-Based Safety is not Behavior-Based Safety. As a client of ours said, "I can't imagine doing behavior observations unless the culture is right first." We have the tools to get the culture right before, during, after or in place of Behavior-Based Safety.
Who Should be Engaged with Culture-Based Safety?
Every safety program sits in a culture that undermines or strengthens it. We see culture as an integral dimension of every safety improvement effort. We do culture change work with companies who are world-class in safety, and who are desperate to stem the tide of injuries.
